Making portraits has been a favorite of mine since I was little. I love to paint my feelings toward the subject. Knowing the person and their essence is so crucial to my artwork.
Is it important to have the painting look like the person that commissioned the portrait? Personally, I love to paint the subject’s energy, how I feel toward the person, how they occupy a space, how compassionate, loving, and caring they are. All these elements determine the color, shape, and mood of the painting.
I have known Ada personally for long time. In this painting, I want to express her gentle approach to the people around her, her love for her family, her compassion for others, her soft smile, and her generosity. The facial composition has the vertical and uprising shapes that represent her active and uprising personality.
In the future I plan to take portraiture to an abstract level using color, shape and texture to represent the subject.
