You never know which door will lead towards your dreams, until you muster up the courage to walk through one.
My fascination with doors of all varieties compelled me to create this painting, “The Red Door” celebrates the social and cultural environment surrounding this entryway when I first visited my son Rami in Washington, DC to celebrate his first rowhome purchase.
Besides the red door itself, my son’s home had an energy and feeling of rising above the clouds that symbolized for me the tremendous change occurring in a formerly-rundown neighborhood of the city. I tried to capture in this painting the many impacts of gentrification: while the neighborhood’s aesthetic and safety improve, there lingers a question of what happens to the people previously living there who are no longer able to afford the neighborhood. As such, if you look closely you can see people roaming silently around the house in “The Red Door”.
